The first batch comprised 60 MBBS students, marking the beginning of a lasting contribution to medical education in the region

Institutional Growth & Leadership

At its inception, Dr. Ramniklal C. Talsania and subsequently Dr. P.C.Rakshit served as the foundational pillars—steering the college as its first Deans and setting the academic and administrative standards for years to come.

Affiliated Hospital: Irwin → Guru Gobind Singh Hospital

The college’s associated hospital has a storied past:

  • Irwin Hospital was inaugurated in 1927, with Dr. Ruks Thomas (FRCS) as the first Surgeon General.

  • Expanded during the reign of Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji in 1933, the hospital gradually merged with several dispensaries to form what became known as G.G. Hospital.

  • In 2000, in commemoration of the 300th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, it was renamed Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital.

Today, GGS Hospital stands as a major tertiary and referral center for the Saurashtra region:

  • Originally a 200-bed facility in 1927, it expanded significantly and as of the mid-2000s reportedly reached a bed strength of 1,275, boasting 50 indoor wards and 10 operation theaters.
