IIT Gandhinagar Admissions 2025: Courses, Fees, Cutoffs, Placements & Ranking

Overview of IIT Gandhinagar
IIT Gandhinagar founded in 2008 as one of the eight new IITs launched by India’s Ministry of HRD, and began operations under the mentorship of IIT Bombay at a temporary campus in Chandkheda. The first batch admitted students in Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, with Dr. Sudhir K.Jain serving as the founding director from 2009 to 2022. In 2012, IITGN secured 400+ acres of land along the Sabarmati River in Palaj village; classes began on the new campus in July 2015

The institute was officially recognized under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act in 2011–12. The campus spread across 400 acres, IITGN’s campus is organized into academic blocks, housing, and student hostels situated along the Sabarmati. It’s the first 5 star GRIHA LD-rated educational campus in India, showcasing excellence in sustainable, climate-responsive design and energy efficiency. Aesthetically modern concrete-clad structures with public plazas, shaded walkways, and wheelchair-friendly infrastructure reflect a thoughtful, people-centric layout . It is Recognized as FSSAI’s only “Eat Right Campus” in India, reflecting a commitment to health and nutrition.

IITGN’s has strong foundational programs in Core Engineering: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Materials, and Computer Science & Engineering. Innovative, interdisciplinary approach: mandatory liberal-arts exposure, foundation courses (Foundation Programme won World Education Award 2013), and strong project-oriented pedagogy. M.Tech and Ph.D. programs expanded since 2017, especially in Computer Science, AI, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Materials, Biological, and Civil Engineering. It has Global outlook supported by the Overseas Research Exposure Scheme, facilitating Ph.D. scholars’ fellowships abroad at top institutions (e.g., MIT, Caltech, CMU).

The institute actively engages in outreach initiatives, addressing real-world challenges and fostering social relevance. Ranked 18th in engineering, 29th overall, and 32nd in research among Indian universities by NIRF 2024, IITGN also holds a QS Asia 2025 rank around 302 and features in the 801–1000 band of the Times Higher Education World Rankings. Beyond academics, IITGN promotes a student-first ethos, with an inclusive and safe campus culture, vibrant extracurricular scene, and high participation in international study programs (over 40% of students). Its commitment to holistic development is also reflected in hosting major events like the 56th Inter-IIT Sports Meet, fostering an environment that balances academic rigor with dynamic student life.
