Overview of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, established in 2016 and mentored by IIT Bombay, is one of the newest additions to the prestigious IIT ecosystem in India. Located in Karnataka, the institute has swiftly evolved into a growing center for technical education and research. Its new permanent campus, spread over 470 acres in Chikkamalligawad, offers modern infrastructure and facilities that support both academic and extracurricular development. With a strong academic foundation, IIT Dharwad offers undergraduate B.Tech programs in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and newer disciplines like Engineering Physics, Mathematics & Computing, Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Infrastructure Engineering, and Interdisciplinary Sciences. These programs are backed by well-equipped labs, experienced faculty, and increasing industry collaboration.

Admission to the B.Tech programs is through the highly competitive JEE Advanced exam, with general category cutoffs usually under AIR 10,000. The total tuition fee for the four-year program is approximately 9.3 lakhs, making it a value-for-money option considering the institute’s placement outcomes. For postgraduate studies, the institute offers M.Tech, MS (Research), and PhD programs in various engineering fields, with admissions based on GATE scores and interviews.

Despite being relatively new, IIT Dharwad has gained a strong reputation, reflected in its inclusion in the top 100 of NIRF engineering rankings, with further improvements expected as its infrastructure and research output grow. In 2024, the placement season saw impressive outcomes with the highest package offered reaching 52 LPA (in CSE), while average salaries ranged between 12–18 LPA across branches like EE and ME. The placement rate for B.Tech students was around 65%, and top recruiters included companies such as Texas Instruments, TCS, Infosys, TVS, Mahindra, CRED, and HCL.

The student life at IIT Dharwad is vibrant, with a close-knit community actively participating in various clubs like robotics, photography, astronomy, and coding. The campus regularly hosts cultural and technical events, hackathons, and inter-IIT competitions, ensuring a well-rounded college experience.
