What Is Operation Sindoor?
Operation Sindoor, launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, was a significant military action carried out by India targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This response followed the Pahalgam massacre and involved coordinated strikes by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force—marking a major assertion of India's defense capabilities.
According to officials, the upcoming NCERT modules aim to educate students on how Pakistan was once again defeated militarily and to explain the strategic and diplomatic execution behind the operation.
Module Format & Coverage
The NCERT module will be released in two formats:
Classes 3–8: Simplified module
Classes 9–12: More detailed version
Each module will be 8–10 pages long and will serve as supplementary reading material.
This module will not only highlight military success but also help students develop a broader understanding of national security, strategic defense, and patriotic values.
Expanding on National Themes
In addition to Operation Sindoor, NCERT is working on several other special modules as part of a series focusing on key national achievements and milestones:
Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)
India’s space achievements: Chandrayaan, Aditya-L1, Subhanshu Shukla’s presence on the International Space Station
The horrors of Partition
Viksit Bharat (Developed India)
Nari Shakti Vandan (Women Empowerment)
India’s leadership at the G20
COVID-19 response
Bharat – The Mother of Democracy
So far, 15 such modules have been released, and more are in development as part of the government’s effort to instill a sense of national pride and showcase India’s rise across domains.
Recent History in Classrooms
NCERT has already started integrating recent historical events into mainstream textbooks. For instance:
The Class 8 Social Science textbook now mentions the 2016 Surgical Strikes carried out by India across the LoC.
It even compares historical events, such as Shivaji’s assault on Mughal nobleman Shaista Khan, to modern military tactics like a "surgical strike".
These additions reflect the changing direction of curriculum development in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on contextual learning, civic awareness, and a modern understanding of India’s geopolitical landscape.
The Operation Sindoor module is more than a lesson in defense—it’s a message to students that history is not just about the past, but a reflection of the nation’s strength and values in the present and future. Through this effort, NCERT, in collaboration with the Government of India, continues to integrate patriotism, awareness, and strategic thinking into school education across India.
