Effective From Academic Year 2025–26
In a major move to tighten academic discipline, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a mandatory 75% attendance rule for all students appearing in the Class 10 and 12 board examinations. This policy is set to take effect from the 2025–26 academic session.
Nagpur Update: Strict Action for Absentees
According to a report from Times of India, CBSE schools in Nagpur have started implementing the attendance directive more stringently.
“Class 10 and 12 CBSE students who remain absent without valid reasons are now being directly barred from appearing in board exams, as per updated school policies.”
School authorities have begun issuing warning letters to both students and parents, reinforcing that regular attendance is now non-negotiable.
Key Highlights:
Minimum Attendance Required: 75% (compulsory for board eligibility)
Effective From: Academic year 2025–26
Covers: Theory classes, internal assessments, and practical sessions
Non-compliance: May result in disqualification from board exams
Any Exemptions?
CBSE has stated that exceptions will only be made under documented circumstances such as:
Medical emergencies
National-level academic or sports participation
Bereavement or critical family emergencies
In such cases, schools must submit an official recommendation with supporting documentation to the CBSE regional office for consideration.
Responsibilities for Schools
CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to:
Maintain detailed digital and physical attendance records
Send monthly attendance reports to parents
Notify defaulters well in advance
Submit final verified attendance to CBSE before board exam form submission
Why This Rule?
The objective of the 75% attendance rule is to:
Foster consistent classroom participation
Discourage long-term absenteeism
Ensure students benefit from in-school academic engagement
Enhance discipline and academic performance
This move has been welcomed by educators but has also put students and parents on alert. With schools in Nagpur already enforcing the rule, it is clear that CBSE plans nationwide implementation without leniency.
Students must now treat attendance as seriously as academic performance. Missing school without valid justification may cost them their board exam eligibility.
