CBSE Exam Controller Clarifies Key Doubts on 2026 Class 10 and 12 Board Exams

As the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduces changes related to the 2026 board examinations, students and parents have raised several questions regarding improvement exams, eligibility rules, attempts after passing Class 12, and the possible expansion of the two-board exam system. CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bharadwaj addressed some of the most commonly asked queries to provide clarity.

What if a student misses a practical exam?
According to Bharadwaj, cases of students missing practical exams are rare. However, CBSE’s online system allows schools to either reschedule the exam or mark the student absent, depending on the situation. Schools can then take further action with the Board’s approval if necessary.

Can practical marks be improved in a second attempt?
There is no provision for improving practical marks in either Class 10 or Class 12. Students are permitted to seek improvement only in theory papers.

How are practical exam dates determined?
For Class 10, internal assessment is conducted continuously throughout the academic year. Students’ performance is uploaded to the CBSE portal starting from January 1 until mid-February.

In Class 12, practical exams are conducted after the academic session ends. In summer-bound schools, they are typically held from January 1 to mid-February. In winter-bound schools, practical exams usually take place between November 1 and mid-December.

Does notebook submission affect Class 10 internal assessment?
Yes. Five marks are allotted for practical or laboratory work completed during the year. Students must maintain proper records of their work, as practical assessment is ongoing and all prescribed activities must be completed. Therefore, submitting notebooks plays an important role in internal assessment marks.

How is internal assessment counted in the final result?
For Class 10, students must secure a minimum of 33% overall marks in each subject, combining theory and internal assessment, to pass.

For Class 12, students must obtain at least 33% marks in the theory examination. In subjects that include practical components, they must score 33% separately in theory and practical, as well as 33% in aggregate, to qualify.
