IIT Roorkee has confirmed that the JEE Advanced 2026 examination pattern will remain unchanged, dismissing speculation about the introduction of adaptive testing for the upcoming engineering entrance exam.
As the organising institute for JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee clarified that the exam will continue to follow the same structure used in previous years. The clarification comes after reports suggested that the exam might adopt an adaptive testing system. However, an official notice has now stated that no such change will be implemented for the 2026 edition of the exam.
With this confirmation, candidates preparing for the highly competitive entrance test can continue their preparation using the existing exam pattern and strategies.
JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination process and serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and several other leading institutions in the country. Each year, one of the IITs conducts the exam under the supervision of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Schedule and Structure
JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled to be held on May 17, 2026, in computer-based mode at examination centres across the country. The test will consist of two compulsory papers, both conducted on the same day.
Paper 1 will take place in the morning session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while Paper 2 will be conducted in the afternoon session from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates must appear for both papers.
Each paper will include questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. While the exact number of questions, question formats, and marking scheme may change slightly from year to year, the overall exam framework generally remains consistent.
What Is Adaptive Testing?
Adaptive testing is an examination method in which the difficulty level of questions changes based on a candidate’s responses. For instance, answering a question correctly may lead to a more challenging question next, while an incorrect response may result in an easier one.
Although this approach has been discussed as a potential format for competitive examinations, officials have clarified that JEE Advanced 2026 will not adopt adaptive testing. The exam will continue to follow its traditional structure.
This announcement provides clarity for aspirants, allowing them to focus their preparation according to the existing JEE Advanced exam pattern.
