CBSE clarifies: Students need 33% overall to pass a subject

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially cleared the confusion surrounding the passing criteria for the 2026–27 board examinations. Class 10 students will continue to need a minimum of 33% marks overall (combined internal assessment and external theory exam) to pass a subject, maintaining the existing assessment format.

Why Did the Confusion Arise?

The ambiguity started after a contradictory line appeared in the recent Secondary School Curriculum for Class 9–10 (Part-1) circular. The document suggested that students might need 33% marks separately in both internal and external assessments.

Following concerns raised by teachers, parents, and school administrators, CBSE addressed the issue directly in a recent webinar, confirming that the rule change was shelved and the old pattern remains fully active.

Class 10 vs. Class 12: Passing Criteria Breakdown

Class Passing Criteria Assessment Pattern
Class 10 33% combined total (Theory + Internal Assessment) 80:20
Class 12 33% separately in Theory and Practical/Internal assessments Varies by subject (70:30 / 80:20)

  • Class 10: Students do not need to score 33% individually in both components. Scoring a combined 33% across internal evaluation and board papers guarantees a pass.

  • Class 12: There is no change for senior secondary students. Class 12 candidates must still score at least 33% marks individually in theory and 33% in practicals/internals.

What CBSE Officials Stated

Addressing educators during the webinar, a board official clarified:

"In Class 10, combining both internal assessment and external exam, students should score 33 per cent. We are continuing with the old format because a lot of changes are coming. So, we wanted to bring all the changes in one go later on. Right now, the old format applies."

Key Takeaways for the 2026–27 Academic Session

  • No Change in Exam Pattern: The question paper design, marking distribution, and assessment system remain identical to the 2025–26 session.

  • Sample Question Papers (SQPs): CBSE will soon release official Class 10 and 12 Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes to help schools maintain uniform evaluation standards.

  • Official Advice: Students and teachers are advised to rely strictly on official notifications issued on cbse.gov.in and disregard unverified circulars.
