A true fruit consists of a pericarp (fruit wall) formed from the ovary wall and seeds formed from ovules. The pericarp is divisible into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. Tomato is a berry fruit derived from a bicarpellary, syncarpous, bi- to tetralocular ovary with a swollen placenta. A berry consists of a membranous skin represented by the epicarp. The mesocarp is the middle fleshy part. The endocarp, septa and placenta are pulpy and edible.
