Q.

The sum of first three terms of a G.P. is 16 and the sum of the next three terms is 128. Find the sum of n terms of the G.P.

1 167(2n-1)
2 157(2n-1)
3 125(3n-1)
4 185(4n-1)

Ans.

(1)

Let a be the first term and r be the common ratio of the G.P.

Then,  a+ar+ar2=16⇒a(1+r+r2)=16                    ...(i)

and  ar3+ar4+ar5=128⇒ar3(1+r+r2)=128          ...(ii)

Dividing (ii) by (i), we get

ar3(1+r+r2)a(1+r+r2)=12816⇒r3=8⇒r=2

Putting r=2 in (i), we get a=167

∴  Sn=a(rn-1r-1)⇒Sn=167(2n-12-1)=167(2n-1)
