If |x-1|+|x-3|≤8, then the values of x lie in the interval
(2)
Here two cases arises,
Case 1: When -∞<x≤1
Then, (x-1)≤0, x-3<0
⇒ |x-1|=-(x-1) and |x-3|=-(x-3)
Now, |x-1|+|x-3|≤8 ⇒ -(x-1)-(x-3)≤8
⇒ -2x+4≤8⇒x≥-2 …(i)
Case 2: When 3≤x<∞
∴ |x-1|=(x-1) and |x-3|=(x-3)
Now, |x-1|+|x-3|≤8
⇒ x-1+x-3≤8⇒2x-4≤8⇒x≤6 …(ii)
From (i) and (ii), we get x∈[-2, 6]
