Q.

Let the set of all values of k∈R such that the equation z(z¯+2+i)+k(2+3i)=0, z∈C, has at least one solution, be the interval [α,β]. Then 9(α+β) is equal to :          [2026]

1 –10
2 –8
3 1013
4 813

Ans.

(1)

We have, z(z¯+2+i)+k(2+3i)=0

Let z = x + iy

Then, (x + iy)(x – iy + 2 + i) + k(2 + 3i) = 0

⇒ (x2+y2+2x–y+2k)+i(x+2y+3k)=0

On comparing real and imaginary parts, we get

x2+y2+2x–y+2k=0          ... (i)

and  x + 2y + 3k = 0          ... (ii)

⇒ x=–(2y+3k)

Put in (i), we get

[–(2y+3k)]2+y2+[–2(2y+3k)]–y+2k=0

⇒ 5y2+(12k–5)y+(9k2–4k)=0

∵  y is real

∴ D≥0

    (12k–5)2–4×5(9k2–4k)≥0

⇒ 36k2+40k–25≤0

⇒ –40–201372≤k≤–40+201372

∴ α=–40–201372 and β=–40+201372

So, 9(α+β)=9(–4072×2)=–10
