Q.

Let  f(x)={(x-1)sin(1x-1),if x≠10,if x=1.  Then, which of the following is true

1 f is differentiable at x=1 but not at x=0
2 f is neither differentiable at x=0 nor at x=1
3 f is differentiable at x=0 and x=1
4 f is differentiable at x=0 but not x=1

Ans.

(4)

Ans.    f is differentiable at x=0 but not x=1

Explanation:

We observe that,

limx→1f(x)-f(1)x-1=limx→1(x-1)sin(1x-1)x-1

                               =limx→1sin(1x-1)

= An oscillating number between -1 and 1

∴    limx→1f(x)-f(1)x-1 does not exist.

⇒ f(x) is not differentiable at x=1.

         =limx→0f(x)-f(0)x-0

         =limx→0(x-1)sin(1x-1)-sin1x

         =limx→0xsin(1x-1)x-limx→0sin(1x-1)+sin1x

        =-sin1-limx→02sin(x2(x-1))cos{2-x2(x-1)}{x2(x-1)} 2(x-1)

         =-sin1+cos1

∴  f(x) is differentiable at x=0
