When two cubes of side (edge) 4 cm are joined end to end we get a cuboid of:

Length = 8 cm,
Breadth = 4 cm,
Height = 4 cm

$∴ Surface area of cuboid = 2 (l b + b h + l h)$

$= 2 (8 \times 4 + 4 \times 4 + 4 \times 8)$

$= 2 (32 + 16 + 32)$

$= 2 \times 80 = 160 {cm}^{2}$
