Q.

For an isosceles prism of angle A and refractive index μ, it is found that the angle of minimum deviation is δm=A..

Which of the following options is/are correct                   [2017]

1 For the angle of incidence i1=A, the ray inside the prism is parallel to the base of the prism.
2 For this prism, the refractive index μ and the angle of prism A are related as A=12cos-1(μ2)
3 At minimum deviation, the incident angle i1 and the refracting angle r1 at the first refracting surface are related by r1=i12
4 For this prism, the emergent ray at the second surface will be tangential to the surface when the angle of incidence at the first surface is i1=sin-1[sinA4cos2(A2)-1-cosA]

Ans.

(1, 3, 4)

For minimum deviation,

    i1=e

    r1=r2=r (say)=A2

    δm=2i1-A

Here,  δm=A⇒2i1-A=A

∴    i1=A⇒e=A

∴    r1=i12

Relation between μ and A

μ=sini1sinr1=sinAsin(A2)=2sin(A2)cos(A2)sin(A2)=2cos(A2)

When emergent ray is tangential to the surface,

μ=sin90°sinr2=1sinr2⇒r2=sin-1(1μ)

But,  r1+r2=A    ∴  r1=A-r2

∴  r1=A-sin-1(1μ)

Applying Snell's law at P,

μ=sini1sinr1     ∴  i1=sin-1[μsin(A-sin-1(1μ))]

For minimum deviation through an isosceles prism, if ∠B=∠C,  PQ∥BC.
