Q.

Consider a concave mirror and a convex lens (refractive index = 1.5) of focal length 10 cm each, separated by a distance of 50 cm in air (refractive index = 1) as shown in the figure. An object is placed at a distance of 15 cm from the mirror. Its erect image formed by this combination has magnification M1. When the set-up is kept in a medium of refractive index 76, the magnification becomes M2. The magnitude |M2M1| is ________.                        [2015]

(7)

Applying mirror formula,

1v+1u=1f   or   1v=1f-1u=1-10+115=-15+10150=-5150=-130

∴  v=-30 cm

And magnification,  m1=-vu=--30-15=-2

Now for refraction from lens,  u=-(50-30)=-20 cm

1v-1u=1fl⇒1v-1-20=110

1v=110-120=120    ∴  v=20 cm

Magnification,  m2=vu=20-20=-1

Magnification produced by the combination,

       M1=m1×m2=(-2)×(-1)=2

Again, when the system is kept in a medium of refractive index 76.

There is no change for the mirror in this case.

For lens,  1fl'=(μlμs-1)(1R1-1R2)

1fl'=(3/27/6-1)(1R1-1R2)⇒1fl'=27(1R1-1R2)

Also, when the lens was in air,

1fl=(1.5-1)(1R1-1R2)=110

∴  (1R1-1R2)=15

Using this result in Eqn. (i), we get

1fl'=27×15   ∴  fl'=352 cm

Again using lens formula,  1v-1u=1fl'

1v-1-20=235⇒1v=235-120=1140    ∴ v=140 cm

Magnification,  m2'=vu=140-20=-7

Magnification produced by the combination,

M2=m1×m2'=(-2)×(-7)=14

    ∴  |M2M1|=142=7
