Q.

A wire of length L and 3 identical cells of negligible internal resistances are connected in series. Due to the current, the temperature of the wire is raised by ΔT in a time t. A number N of similar cells is now connected in series with a wire of the same material and cross-section but of length 2L. The temperature of the wire is raised by the same amount ΔT in the same time t. The value of N is                        [2001]

Ans.

(2)

Let R be the resistance of the wire.

Energy released in t second, H=(3V)2R×t    (∵H=V2Rt)

Also, H=mcΔT=9V2R×t       (∵H=mcΔT)                        ⋯(i)

Let R' be the resistance of the wire of double length '2l'.

∴  Now energy released in t-seconds

       H'=(NV)22R×t    (∵R∝l)

Also H'=m'cΔT=(2m)cΔT

2mcΔT=N2V22R×t                          ⋯(ii)

Dividing eq. (i) by (ii)

mcΔT2mcΔT=9V2R×tN2V22R×t or, 12=9×2N2

or, N2=18×2        ∴  N=6
