Q.

A ray of light passes through four transparent media with refractive indices μ1, μ2, μ3 and μ4 as shown in the figure. The surfaces of all media are parallel. If the emergent ray CD is parallel to the incident ray AB, we must have                        [2001]

1 μ1=μ2
2 μ2=μ3
3 μ3=μ4
4 μ4=μ1

Ans.

(4)

Applying Snell's law at A,

μ21=sinisinr1=μ2μ1                              ...(i)

Applying Snell's law at B,

      μ32=sinr1sinr2=μ3μ2          ...(ii)

Again applying Snell's law at C,

       μ43=sinr2sini=μ4μ3         ...(iii)

Multiplying eq. (i), (ii) and (iii),

       μ2μ1×μ3μ2×μ4μ3=sinisinr1×sinr1sinr2×sinr2sini

∴  μ4μ1=1          ∴  μ1=μ4

If the emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray after travelling through a number of parallel interfaces, then the refractive index of the first and the last medium is always the same.

Here, the incident ray is medium-1 OA∥CD, so the emergent ray is in medium-4.

∴  μ1=μ4
