Q.

A mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen has volume 8310 cm3, temperature 300 K, pressure 100 kPa and mass 13.2 g. The number of moles of carbon dioxide and oxygen gases in the mixture respectively are ______.

(Assume both carbon dioxide and oxygen gases behave like ideal gases) [R = 8.31 J/mol.K]               [2026]

1 0.15 and 0.18
2 0.25 and 0.08
3 0.21 and 0.12
4 0.13 and 0.20

Ans.

(3)

Total number of moles in the mixture

(n1+n2)=PVRT=105×8.31×10-38.31×300=13 mole≈0.333 mole

Mole equation: n1+n2=13≈0.333 mole    ...(i)

Mass equation: 44n1+32n2=13.2                ...(ii)

(where 44 and 32 are the molar masses of CO2 and O2 respectively)

On solving eq. (i) and eq. (ii)

44n1+32(0.333-n1)=13.2

44n1+10.667-32n1=13.2

∵  12n1=2.533

n1≈0.211 mol

then, calculate n2

n2=0.333-0.211

n2=0.122 mol
