Q.

A 4 μF capacitor, a resistance of 2.5 MΩ is in series with a 12 V battery. Find the time after which the potential difference across the capacitor is 3 times the potential difference across the resistor. [Given ln(2) = 0.693]                      [2005]

1 13.86 s
2 6.93 s
3 7 s
4 14 s

Ans.

(1)

At any instant of time t during the charging process, the transient current in the circuit is

I=V0Re-t/RC              ∴ Potential difference across resistance R

VR=[V0Re-t/RC]×R

=V0e-t/RC                                  ⋯(i)

∴ Potential difference across C

      VC=V0-V0e-t/RC=V0(1-e-t/RC)                   ⋯(ii)

∵  VC=3VR

∴ V0(1-e-t/RC)=3V0.e-t/RC

⇒1-e-t/RC=3e-t/RC⇒1=4e-t/RC

Taking logarithm on both sides

loge1=2loge2+(-tRC)

⇒0=2×2.303 log102-tRC

⇒t=(2×2.303 log102)×2.5×106×4×10-6

∴  t=13.86 s
