Overview
Burdwan Medical College & Hospital (often called BMC) is one of the well-established government medical colleges in West Bengal. Located in Purba Bardhaman district, it was founded in 1969. The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). With a large teaching hospital and well-developed infrastructure, it serves as a major centre for medical education and healthcare in the region.
Courses Offered
BMC offers a broad range of courses at various levels:
Undergraduate
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery): 5.5 years (including 1-year internship), with an annual intake of 200 seats.
Postgraduate (MD / MS / PG Diploma)
Around 20+ MD and MS specialities.
PG Diplomas (e.g. Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Diploma in Ophthalmology) are also offered.
Super-Speciality (DM / Doctorate)
Limited DM programmes, e.g. Cardiology, Neurology.
Other Allied / Support Courses
Nursing, paramedical / allied health disciplines may also be present via associated hospital / college systems.
Admission Process 2025
For MBBS: Admission is through NEET-UG. Candidates must appear in NEET-UG, and participate in both All India Quota (if applicable) and State Quota (West Bengal Medical Counselling) rounds.
For MD / MS / PG Diploma / DM: Admission via NEET-PG or relevant postgraduate or super-speciality entrance, followed by counselling.
Eligibility generally includes passing 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotech for MBBS; for PG, MBBS degree + completion of required internship, and valid exam scores. Categories/reservations follow state and central norms.
Fee Structure
The tuition fees for MBBS (first year) are relatively low since it is a government college. One reported figure for first-year MBBS tuition is ≈ 11,000 units.
PG-level tuition fees for MD / MS first year are reported to be ≈ 20,050 units for many specialities.
Hostel, library, laboratory, and hospital usage fees etc., and miscellaneous charges are extra. Fee amounts are subject to updates per government directives.
Cutoffs (Recent & Expected)
Here are some recent cutoff trends and what can be expected for 2025:
In Round 1 of 2025 NEET UG (MBBS), the general category closing rank for BMC in West Bengal state counselling was ~ 20,946.
Earlier rounds and in All India Quota had somewhat lower (better) closing ranks.
For neighbouring years (2023, 2024) the closing ranks for general category were in ranges somewhat better (i.e. lower rank numbers) in earlier rounds, indicating competition tends to tighten as rounds progress.
Expected for 2025:
General category might need an all-India / state rank somewhere between ~ 18,000 to 25,000 depending on whether it’s Round 1, state quota or AIQ.
Reserved categories (OBC / SC / ST / EWS) will have higher (worse) closing ranks, giving more leeway but still requiring solid NEET UG marks.
Placements & Internship
MBBS students complete a compulsory one-year rotatory internship post the academic study. This gives exposure across major clinical departments.
After PG degrees, many graduates take up Junior Resident / Resident positions in government or teaching hospitals. BMC’s clinical exposure is high given the large hospital attached.
Super-speciality training (DM etc.) is limited in seats, but those who obtain them generally have strong opportunities in teaching hospitals or specialist clinics.
Being a government institution, monetary compensation (stipends in PG / residency / internship) follows government norms.
Ranking & Reputation
Burdwan Medical College is well-regarded in West Bengal among government medical colleges, especially for its clinical exposure, senior faculty, and hospital facilities.
It is one of the older colleges in the state (established 1969), with a large campus and hospital capacity.
In many college comparison/ranking listings, BMC holds a strong position among state medical colleges. Some data suggest rankings around #200-#250 among medical colleges nationally (varies by ranking agency).
Strengths & Challenges
Strengths:
Government-run, so fees are much lower than private colleges.
Good number of MBBS and PG seats.
Strong reputation, solid infrastructure, large hospital with plenty of patients → good clinical exposure.
Offers super-speciality (DM) options, which is a plus.
Challenges:
Competition is stiff, especially for general category or popular specialities.
Cutoffs can rise sharply in later rounds.
Facilities like hostel, amenities might be under pressure due to large student intake.
For DM / super speciality seats, availability is limited.
Final Thoughts
If you aim for MBBS in 2025, Burdwan Medical College is a strong option. To improve chances: try to secure a NEET-UG rank significantly better than previous closing ranks (i.e. well under ~ 20,000 for general category in state quota, if possible). Keep backup options too. For PG, choosing less competitive specialities or in reserved categories might help. Overall, BMC balances affordability, reputation, and clinical opportunity very well.
