Q.

Which of the following is least ionic                             [2024]

1 BaCl2
2 AgCl
3 KCI
4 CoCl2

Ans.

(2)

All chlorides are soluble in water except of Ag+,Hg22+,Pb2+,Cu+,SbO+,BiO+ and Hg2O+. Thus AgCl is water insoluble whereas BaCl2,KCl and CoCl2 are water soluble. As like dissolves like, this gives us an idea that AgCl is least ionic of all. Ag+ has pseudo noble gas configuration [(n-1)s2,(n-1)p6,(n-1)d10 type configuration]. Due to poor shielding of d and f electrons its Zeff is high so polarization power of Ag+ is high. This induces significant covalent character in AgCl.
