The galvanometer shows zero reading when no current passes through it.

Condition of balanced metre bridge, $\frac{R_{1}}{R_{2}} = \frac{x}{(l - x)}$

Given : $l = 40 cm, R_{1} = 8 cm, R_{2} = 12 cm$

$\frac{8}{12} = \frac{x}{40 - x}$

or $320 - 8 x = 12 x$

$∴$ $x = 16$ $cm$

From B, $40 - 16 = 24$ $cm$
