Q.

Given below are two statements:

Statement (I): Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic.

Statement (II): Acidic/basic nature of salt solution of a salt of weak acid and weak base depends on Ka and Kb value of acid and the base forming it.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:         [2024]

1 Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
2 Both Statement I and Statement ll are incorrect
3 Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
4 Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Ans.

(4)

Statement I: Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3) is basic in nature. This is a true statement.

Statement II: Ammonium çarbonate is salt of weak acid (H2CO3,pKa = 6.35) and weak base (NH3,pKb = 4.76). For such salts, pH of aqueous solution depends upon acidic and basic strength of the component acid and base. Since basic strength of ammonia dominates over acidic strength of carbonic acid, aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic. So, this is also a true statement.
