Q.

On charging the lead storage battery, the oxidation state of lead changes from x1 to y1 at the anode and from x2 to y2 at the cathode. The values of x1,y1,x2,y2 are respectively:            [2025]

1 +4, +2, 0, +2
2 +2, 0, +2, +4
3 0, +2, +4, +2
4 +2, 0, 0, +4

Ans.

(2)

The reactions in lead storage battery, when the battery is in use are given below:

Anode reaction:

Pb(s)+SO42-(aq)  PbSO4(s)+2e-

Cathode reaction:

PbO2(s)+SO42-(aq)+4H+(aq)+2e-  PbSO4(s)+2H2O(l)

On charging the battery the reaction is reversed and Pb+2SO4(s) on anode and cathode is converted into Pb0 and Pb+4O2(s), respectively.

So x1=2, y1=0, x2=2, y2=4
