Topiwala National Medical College (TNMC), Mumbai
Topiwala National Medical College, affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, was founded on 4 September 1921 during India’s Non-Cooperation Movement, making it one of the first Indian-run medical institutions under British rule. It began as the National Medical College in Byculla, supported by freedom activists, and gained its current name after a generous contribution from barrister M.N. “Topiwala” Desai. The college is paired with the B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital, an 1,800-bed tertiary-care facility, which has grown into one of Mumbai’s largest public hospitals.
From a medical education standpoint, TNMC offers a robust spectrum of programs, from 150 MBBS seats annually to postgraduate and super-specialty offerings (MD/MS/DM/MCh), along with allied health degrees. It boasts pioneering departments such as Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Dermatopathology, and Speech & Audiology—with TNMC being the first public hospital performing robotic surgeries in the region. The institute’s urban campus in South Mumbai cultivates a deep clinical training environment, exposing students to high patient volumes and diverse cases early in their studies. Moreover, it celebrated its centenary in 2021, reaffirming its legacy of merging academic excellence with public health service
