College Overview

Founded on 14 September 1972 as Regional Medical College under a joint initiative of North Eastern states, the institution was later renamed Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in the mid-1990s. Initially managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, it transitioned under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in April 2007. The foundation of its core hospital dates back to 1968, inaugurated as a 300-bed General Hospital—still operational today—and later integrated into RIMS for clinical training. Spread across 192–300 acres in Lamphelpat (just ~8?km from Imphal Airport), RIMS also earned acclaim as the only North-Eastern medical college to feature among India’s Top 40 Medical Institutions in NIRF rankings (38th in 2019–2020).

Specialties & Academic Strength

1. Regional Hub for Medical Education

   A 1,074-bed teaching hospital serving 2.4 lakh outpatient and 31,000+ inpatient cases annually, offering students intensive early clinical exposure. 

2. Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases

   In January 2025, RIMS became the first Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases in Northeast India (13th nationally), providing specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services—underscoring its growing research and clinical capabilities.

3. Comprehensive Academic Programs

   Offers MBBS with 125 seats, over 150 seats across 26 MD/MS disciplines, and super-specialty programs (DM/MCh), recognized by NMC and affiliated with Manipur University.
