CBSE Introduces High-Definition Audiovisual CCTV with 15-Day Backup in Schools
In a landmark move to bolster student safety, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras equipped with real-time audiovisual recording across key school areas. According to The Times of India, this directive was formalized on July 21, 2025, via an amendment to Chapter 4 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-laws 2018.
What’s Required
Coverage Areas: Entry/exit points, lobbies, corridors, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, canteens, storerooms, playgrounds—excluding washrooms.
Backup Storage: Schools must maintain a minimum 15-day backup of recorded footage, accessible for review by authorities.
Why It Matters
Strengthening Accountability: CBSE secretary Himanshu Gupta emphasized this measure enhances monitoring and emotional safety alongside physical security.
Aligned with Child Protection Standards: This action closely follows National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) guidelines and underscores measures against bullying and abuse.
Implementation & Compliance
By Laws Amendment: The updated clause in the Affiliation Bye-laws has made these CCTV requirements mandatory for all affiliated schools.
Consistent Functionality: Schools are expected to ensure 24/7 maintenance and monitoring of equipment.
What This Means for Schools
Immediate Audit & Planning
Schools should conduct safety audits to identify critical zones and assess current surveillance systems.
Budgeting & Investments
Funds must be allocated for high-resolution audiovisual CCTV systems and storage infrastructure.
Maintenance & Staff Training
Ensuring uninterrupted functionality and educating staff on privacy and surveillance protocols is essential.
Communication & Transparency
Informing parents, teachers, and students about the new system—its objectives, coverage areas, and privacy compliance—will be key to smooth adoption.
The Impact: Safer Schools, Greater Trust
The CBSE’s move marks a significant shift toward technology-driven safeguarding in educational settings. By mandating audiovisual monitoring and secure backup protocols, schools are better equipped to deter and investigate incidents—ultimately promoting a safer, more transparent environment for learning.
