Behind the Stethoscope: The Story of National Doctor’s Day

National Doctor’s Day is observed annually on July 1 in India to honor the invaluable contributions of medical professionals and to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a pioneering physician and statesman.

What’s the reasoning for choosing July 1?
The date marks both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882–1962), a renowned physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr. Roy was instrumental in shaping India's healthcare system, establishing institutions like the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India. In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India instituted National Doctor’s Day in 1991.
